How Mr. Squish tests pillows
This page is the single source of truth for how our pillow reviews are produced — what we measure, what we do not, and how we label a review when we have not slept on the pillow ourselves.
How we select pillows
We start from demand, not from affiliate programs. We look at what people are actually searching for by position (side, back, stomach, combination), by problem (neck pain, shoulder pain, overheating, CPAP, pregnancy), and by format (adjustable, cervical, body, wedge, travel, reading). Then we shortlist the pillows that dominate those conversations plus credible newer models that fill a real gap.
A pillow is never added to a best-of list because it pays better. A pillow with no affiliate program can and does outrank one that has one.
How we acquire pillows
Pillows we test hands-on are either bought at retail or supplied by the brand as a review sample. Either way the terms are the same: no copy approval, no score approval, no embargo on criticism. When a pillow was supplied for free, we say so in the review's Sources & verification block.
Minimum testing duration
A hands-on review requires a minimum of 14 consecutive nights with the pillow in a real bed. Two weeks is where the two things that matter most start to show: whether the fill keeps its loft after being compressed nightly, and whether the pillow that felt great on night one still feels great once the novelty wears off.
The exact start date, end date, and duration of each test is stored with the pillow's record and shown in the Mr. Squish testing box at the top of the review.
Loft measurement
Loft is measured with a rigid ruler set against the side of the pillow, on a flat medium-firm mattress, at three points: unloaded height, height under a 10 lb head-weight load, and height again after the load is removed for 60 seconds. We record the unloaded figure at the start of the test and repeat the whole measurement at the end so loft loss is a number, not an impression.
We publish a measured loft only when we measured it. Where we have not, the review shows the manufacturer's advertised loft and labels it as such.
Compression testing
The compression test applies a 10 lb weight over the centre of the pillow for 60 seconds, then measures how much height comes back after one minute and after ten. This is what separates a fill that will still work in a year from one that will pack flat. Adjustable pillows are tested at the fill level we would actually recommend, not overstuffed.
Temperature and cooling testing
Cooling is measured with a surface thermometer at the head contact point: a baseline reading in the room, a reading at lights-out, and a reading after six hours of sleep. We record the temperature rise rather than an absolute number, because room conditions vary. The tester's subjective experience — whether they had to flip the pillow — is logged alongside the readings.
Side-sleeper testing
On the side we are checking one thing above all: whether the pillow fills the gap between the ear and the shoulder so the neck stays in line with the spine. We look at head tilt from behind, whether the shoulder gets crushed or splayed, and whether there is any morning stiffness across the test period.
Back-sleeper testing
On the back we check chin position. Too much loft pushes the chin toward the chest and closes the airway; too little lets the head fall back. We note the loft setting that worked, and whether a contoured shape helped or got in the way.
Stomach-sleeper testing
Stomach sleeping already rotates the neck, so we test how flat a pillow can go and whether it stays flat under a face rather than rebounding. Adjustable pillows are stripped down to their minimum usable fill for this pass.
Adjustability testing
For adjustable pillows we log how much fill was removed or added to reach a comfortable setting, how messy the process was, whether the pillow can be refilled without spilling, and whether the fill can be redistributed by hand once it settles.
Washing and durability testing
We follow the manufacturer's own care instructions exactly, run one full wash and dry cycle, and record what happened: shrinkage, clumping, fill migration, seam or zipper failure, drying time, and whether loft returned. The washing instructions we publish come from the manufacturer's documentation, stored once in the pillow's canonical record so every page on the site states the same thing.
How scoring works
Every pillow carries category ratings on a 0–10 scale for support, pressure relief, cooling, and ease of adjustment, plus an overall Mr. Squish score. Ratings come from the testing record where a hands-on test exists and from documented product characteristics where it does not.
Scores are relative to what a pillow is trying to be. A thin stomach-sleeper pillow is not marked down for lacking side-sleeper loft; it is marked down if it fails stomach sleepers.
Research reviews vs hands-on reviews
We publish two kinds of review and we never blur them. A hands-on review means a named tester slept on that pillow for at least two weeks and the measurements above were taken. Those reviews show a Mr. Squish testing box with the tester, the dates, and the results.
A research review means we have not slept on the pillow. It is built from manufacturer specifications, manuals, warranty and certification documentation, and category comparison — and it is labelled that way at the top of the page. We would rather tell you we have not tested something than imply we have.
How affiliate relationships affect reviews
Affiliate relationships do not determine review scores, rankings, or recommendations. Mr. Squish earns a commission when you buy through some of the links on this site, at no cost to you. Commission rates are not an input to any score, and nobody at a brand sees a review before it publishes.
