Best Pillow by Body Weight, Height & Sleep Position

Pillow loft is a gap-filling problem: the space between your head and the mattress is set by your shoulder width and how far your body sinks into the bed. Bigger frames, taller builds, and side sleeping all widen that gap. Pick your three inputs below to get a target loft band, a firmness starting point, and the picks that fit it.

Aim for a pillow that keeps your ears roughly in line with your shoulders once you have settled into the mattress. If you sink deeply into a soft mattress, drop one band; on a very firm mattress, go up one.

Matching picks

Ranked from our review catalogue by position fit, firmness, and whether the loft can be adjusted. Adjustable pillows are favoured because they can be tuned to any band.

Why weight matters

Heavier sleepers press further into the mattress, which closes the gap under the head less than you would expect — the shoulder sinks too, so the neck still needs support. Firmer, higher-loft fills hold that gap open instead of collapsing overnight.

Why height matters

Taller sleepers usually have broader shoulders and longer necks, so the head sits further from the mattress in a side position. Shorter, lighter sleepers typically need one band less than the average recommendation.

Where the matrix stops

These are starting points based on geometry and manufacturer loft specs, not a medical fitting. Mattress firmness, shoulder width, and any neck condition can shift you a band in either direction — and if you wake in pain most mornings, talk to a clinician.
