Liberator · Compact single-angle wedge
Liberator Wedge Review

The default recommendation in this category. A small, very firm foam wedge that lifts the hips a few inches and stays where you put it, in a shape that stores under a bed or reads as a normal accent cushion.

What it actually does
The whole premise of a position cushion is that a bed pillow collapses. Down, shredded foam, and fibre fill all give way once you put body weight plus motion on them, so the angle you set up disappears within a minute. The Wedge uses a dense foam core that resists that compression, which is why it holds a pelvic tilt instead of flattening into the mattress.
Practically, the lift it provides changes the angle of the hips by a few inches. For a lot of couples that is the difference between a position that strains the lower back and one that does not — which is also why this shape gets recommended for people with lumbar issues or limited hip mobility.
Cover, cleaning, and discretion
The cover unzips and goes in the wash; under it sits a moisture-resistant liner that protects the foam. That liner is the reason we would not substitute a decorative floor cushion here — foam absorbs, and a plain cushion has no barrier.
Liberator's shapes are deliberately designed to look like furniture. The Wedge in a neutral colour reads as an ordinary accent cushion on a chair, which matters if you share space with roommates or have kids in the house.
Who should skip it
If you want multiple angles, or a long incline for reclined and face-to-face positions, the Wedge alone will feel limiting — that is what the Ramp and the Wedge Ramp Combo exist for. And if you only occasionally want a couple of inches of lift, a firm folded blanket costs nothing and does most of the job.
What works
- Firm enough to hold an angle under full body weight, which ordinary bed pillows cannot do
- Small footprint — genuinely storable and reasonably discreet
- Water-resistant liner under the cover is the practical difference versus a decorative cushion
- Cheapest entry point into the shape system, and it pairs with the Ramp later
What doesn't
- Single fixed angle — no adjustability
- Microvelvet grabs lint and pet hair
- Expensive next to a rolled towel or a firm couch cushion if you only need occasional lift
The bottom line
If you have never owned a position cushion, buy this one. It is the cheapest way to find out whether a few inches of firm, non-collapsing hip lift actually solves your problem, it stores and disguises better than anything else in the line, and it stays useful later as the small half of the Wedge Ramp Combo. The only buyers who should start elsewhere are people who already know they need torso-length support (Ramp) or a plusher, smaller cushion (Jaz Motion).
Positions it supports
- Missionary with pelvic tilt
- Rear-entry support
- Oral at a comfortable height
- Solo use / propping
Care and cleaning
- The microvelvet outer cover unzips and is machine washable; wash cold and air dry so the pile does not flatten in a hot dryer.
- The moisture-resistant liner underneath is the part that protects the foam — spot-clean it rather than soaking it, and never put the foam core itself in water.
- Dense polyurethane foam does not fluff back the way fibre fill does. Store it flat or on edge rather than crushed under heavier objects, or it will take a set.
- Microvelvet attracts lint and pet hair. A lint roller kept in the same drawer is a genuinely practical accessory.
How it compares
Liberator Ramp
The Ramp supports the whole torso instead of one point. Choose it if your complaint is back or neck fatigue rather than a wrong angle.
Liberator Jaz Motion
Smaller, plusher, two angles, similar money. Choose it for discretion and comfort against hip bones; choose the Wedge for maximum firm lift.
Liberator Wedge Ramp Combo
Contains this shape plus the Ramp for less than buying both separately. Worth skipping straight to if you already know one angle will not be enough.
FAQ
Can I just use bed pillows instead?
You can, and it is the right first experiment. The difference is compression: down, fibre, and shredded foam collapse within a minute under body weight plus motion, so the angle you set up disappears. A dense foam wedge holds it. Pillows also have no moisture barrier.
How much lift does it actually give?
A few inches of pelvic tilt — enough to change the angle of the hips meaningfully, not enough to feel like a piece of furniture under you. Liberator sells Original and X-Wide profiles; the X-Wide is the one to choose for broader bodies or if narrow cushions have felt unstable.
Is it discreet?
In a neutral colour it reads as an ordinary firm accent cushion on a chair, and it fits under a bed. It is the most storable full-size shape in the line; only the Jaz Motion is easier to hide.
Does it help with back pain?
Many people buy it for exactly that reason, because supporting the pelvis reduces the lumbar strain some positions create. It is a comfort aid, not a medical device — if you have a diagnosed disc or hip problem, ask your clinician which angles are safe for you.
