How to Clean and Store a Position Cushion
Cleaning is the part of this category nobody covers properly, and it is the difference between a cushion that lasts years and one that becomes unusable. The rule is simple: the cover gets washed, the liner gets wiped, the foam never gets wet.
The cover
Unzip and remove it after use. Machine wash cool with a mild detergent, no fabric softener, and air dry. Microvelvet and similar plush covers are heat-sensitive — a hot dryer flattens the pile and can shrink the cover enough that it no longer fits the foam.
If you use a cushion regularly, a second cover is genuinely worth buying so one can be in the wash.
The moisture liner
The inner liner is a barrier, not laundry. Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it dry fully before putting the cover back on. Sealing a damp liner inside a cover is how odour and mildew start.
Consider a towel or a washable throw over the cushion during use — it saves the cover and the liner and cuts the laundry burden considerably.
The foam core
Never put a foam core in a washing machine and never soak it. It tears under its own saturated weight and it will not dry through. For an accident that reaches the foam, blot, dab with a barely damp cloth, and air dry with a fan for a full day.
Storage
Store shapes flat or standing, not squashed under heavy items — sustained compression permanently deforms high-density foam. Keep them out of direct sunlight, which degrades both foam and cover fabric.
For discretion, neutral cover colours let smaller shapes sit openly as accent cushions; larger ramps store upright in a closet or behind a chair.
FAQ
Can I use a disinfectant spray on the liner?
A mild, fabric-safe spray is fine on the liner. Avoid bleach and solvent-based cleaners, which break down both the liner coating and the foam beneath.
How long do these last?
The foam typically outlasts the cover by years under intermittent home use. Replace the cover when the pile wears or the zip fails rather than replacing the whole cushion.
