If you've decided a contour pillow is the answer to your neck pain, these are the two most likely candidates: the TEMPUR-Neck, the original ergonomic wave pillow, and the ZAMAT Original, a shoulder-notch cervical pillow at roughly half the price with an adjustable insert.

They share a shape philosophy and almost nothing else. The TEMPUR is denser, firmer and fixed. The ZAMAT is softer, notched for the shoulder, and lets you change the height.

Firmness is the real dividing line

TEMPUR foam is denser than almost anything else on the market. That means the contour it holds is the contour you get — your head does not sink through it and flatten the neck roll by 1 a.m. For people whose necks need to be held in place, that firmness is the point.

The ZAMAT is noticeably softer. It still supports the cervical curve, but it yields more on contact, which makes it much easier to fall asleep on if you've bounced off firm contour pillows before.

Shape: wave vs shoulder notch

The TEMPUR is a symmetrical two-lobe wave. Flip it to choose a taller or shorter neck roll, which is a genuinely useful low-tech way to fine-tune loft — but the shape assumes your shoulder stays outside the pillow.

The ZAMAT's notch is cut for the shoulder to slide into, plus raised wings that keep your head from rolling off centre. For side sleepers who wake up with a numb arm rather than a stiff neck, that notch matters more than any material difference.

Getting the height right

This is where cervical pillows succeed or fail. The TEMPUR handles it with sizing — you pick a size at purchase and flip between lobes — which means a wrong choice needs a return. The ZAMAT handles it with a removable insert you can pull out or leave in, and that flexibility saved two of our testers who found the full height too tall.

If you've never used a contour pillow, the adjustable route is the safer bet.

Heat and longevity

Dense foam traps heat, and the TEMPUR is dense foam without much ventilation — hot sleepers notice it. The ZAMAT's ventilated core and knit cover run cooler in our six-hour surface checks.

Longevity flips the result. TEMPUR foam is famously durable and holds its shape for many years; softer, cheaper contour foam gradually loses definition. Over a five-year horizon the price gap narrows more than it looks.

Pick TEMPUR-Neck Pillow

Choose the TEMPUR-Neck if you want firm, unchanging cervical support that will not soften under your head, you mostly sleep on your back, and you want a pillow that lasts many years.

Our verdict

For firm, long-lasting back-sleeping support, the TEMPUR-Neck is the better pillow and worth its price. For side sleepers, hot sleepers, and anyone new to contour pillows, the ZAMAT Original is the smarter first purchase — the adjustable insert removes most of the risk.
