How we chose this shortlist
Moisture management
A moisture-wicking cover and mesh panels describe construction. They do not tell us how many degrees cooler a whole pillow will remain overnight.
Core and surface are different
A cool initial touch can fade. Graphite, mesh, latex and buckwheat are different design approaches, not interchangeable proof of performance.
Your actual bedding
Use your usual pillowcase and protector when evaluating comfort. A thick extra layer changes the surface you touch.
Which approach fits your setup?
| Your situation | Start by comparing | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| You want removable fill and cooling-focused materials | Compare the exact Coop Eden and Cool+ constructions | Neither has a measured overnight cooling advantage recorded by Mr. Squish. |
| You want a different core material | Compare latex, foam and hull construction | Choose a surface and height you can tolerate as well as the material. |
| Your pillow feels damp at the surface | Check the actual cover, pillowcase and protector | A different fill cannot establish how your outer bedding handles moisture. |
| Your existing pillow height already feels wrong | Resolve fit alongside the cooling comparison | An extra cooling feature cannot establish a comfortable height. |
Before you buy: four practical checks
- Decide whether the bigger problem is a damp cover, heat, or an uncomfortable pillow height.
- Choose a fill and shape you can tolerate before paying for cooling features.
- Keep bedding consistent while comparing your old and new pillow.
- Review trial conditions and return shipping before ordering.

What the cooling claims actually establish
Bedgear Balance’s Dri-Tec cover is marketed for moisture management, while its Air-X mesh addresses airflow. Saatva Graphite combines infused foam with a shredded foam-and-latex core. These are documented design choices, not comparative temperature results.
We have not run overnight thermal tests on these picks. A claim that one stays cold all night or is a measured cooling winner would go beyond the evidence available here.
Decide which compromise matters least
Hullo offers hull-fill adjustment but has a firm, rustling construction. Avocado offers loose latex-and-kapok fill; Saatva Latex comes in preset lofts. They are not interchangeable simply because they all appear in a cooling guide.
Also check care. The current Balance instructions permit washing the cover, not the inner fill. Avocado’s page gives conflicting cover-care directions, so follow the label on the product or ask the brand before laundering.
Cooling for side sleepers: check height and materials separately
A cooling label does not establish a useful height. Compare the pillow on your own mattress after it compresses, and check any second position you use. No single inch range fits every side sleeper.
Compare documented ventilation, cover fabric, core and adjustment method after choosing a construction you can tolerate. A thicker pillow is not automatically hotter, and a thinner pillow is not automatically an acceptable fit.
Compare the material trade-offs without a cooling ranking
Hullo offers reshapeable hull fill with firmness, rustling and weight to consider. Saatva Latex offers a layered core in preset heights. Adjustable foam gives a different surface and a different way to change the amount of fill.
Those features help compare ownership and fit. We have no controlled overnight temperature results establishing buckwheat, latex, a ventilated grid or a gel pillow as the coolest option.
Gel and gel-infused pillows: three different constructions
Gel appears in pillows in three forms. A gel layer laminated to the surface is designed to feel cool on first contact; manufacturers generally describe that sensation as short-lived because the layer warms toward skin temperature. Gel beads mixed into shredded foam are presented mainly as an airflow and texture feature. Gel infused through a solid memory-foam slab is the most common form and the one where the published specifications say least about overnight temperature.
Mr. Squish has not measured pillow temperatures. Read gel as a material choice, not demonstrated cooling performance, and weigh it alongside core airflow, cover fabric, and how deeply your head sinks in.

FAQ
Do you have temperature measurements for these pillows?
No. These are research picks based on materials and construction. We do not have comparative overnight temperature measurements.
Is moisture-wicking the same as active cooling?
No. Moving moisture and removing heat are different claims. Neither a fabric label nor a mesh panel proves a sustained temperature reduction for the finished pillow.
Should I change my pillowcase too?
Evaluate the pillow with the case and protector you normally use. Otherwise you are comparing a different sleep surface from the one you will use at home.
Does every side sleeper need a tall cooling pillow?
No. Mattress settlement, position and pillow compression affect the fit. Compare the actual setup rather than relying on a high-loft label or a fixed inch range.
Is buckwheat proven to be the coolest fill?
Not by our testing. Hull construction is a feature to compare, but Mr. Squish has no controlled overnight comparison establishing a coolest material.
Does a gel layer establish all-night cooling?
No. It describes the construction; a sustained temperature difference would require measurements of the finished pillow under stated conditions.
Are gel pillows cooler than regular memory foam?
Some are designed to feel cooler to the touch, but a gel label alone does not demonstrate lower overnight temperature. Construction details such as ventilation, open-cell structure, and a breathable cover are more informative than the word gel. We have not measured this ourselves.
