Pillow cooling is mostly fill physics: how much air moves through the material and how much heat the material stores. No fill is magic, but the ranking by construction is clear, and it does not match the marketing ranking. Here is how the common fills actually stack up for hot sleepers, with the comfort trade-offs that ride along.

Tier one: fills that actively move air
Buckwheat hulls top the list and it is not close. The hulls interlock with air gaps throughout, so the fill is mostly ventilation channel — heat has nowhere to pool. The trade-offs are firmness, weight, and a rustling sound when you move. Hot sleepers who tolerate the feel consistently report the coolest sleep of any fill.
Natural latex — especially ventilated Talalay — is second. The open-cell structure breathes continuously, pinholes add channels, and the feel is the opposite of buckwheat: springy, smooth, and silent. Grid-structure pillows (a polymer grid wrapped around latex or foam) achieve similar airflow by geometry.
Tier two: fills that breathe adequately
Shredded memory foam and shredded latex let air move between the pieces — not as freely as hulls or channels, but far better than solid foam. The adjustability is a bonus: fluffing the fill restores airflow nightly.
Down and wool deserve credit here too. Down lofts around air pockets and regulates temperature well in moderate heat, though it insulates more than it ventilates. Wool wicks moisture actively and buffers humidity — underrated for sweaty sleepers specifically, since evaporating sweat is how the body cools.
Tier three: fills that trap heat
Solid memory foam is the hottest mainstream fill: dense, closed-structure, and designed to soften with your body heat — heat retention is part of how it works. Gel infusions delay but do not change this. Solid polyester and microfiber cluster nearby: cheap, soft, and warm.
If you love the contouring of solid foam and sleep hot, the compromises are a ventilated or cut-foam design, or a cooling cover — both help, neither matches the tier-one fills.
The fill is not the whole system
Your pillowcase and protector sit between you and the fill, and a thick waterproof protector can cancel a breathable fill entirely. Percale cotton or performance-knit cases preserve airflow; heavy sateen and vinyl protectors destroy it.
And loft interacts with cooling: the deeper your head sinks into a pillow, the more surface contact and trapped heat. Hot side sleepers face the hardest version of this problem — they need tall pillows, and tall pillows have more material to warm up. The answer is a tall pillow from a tier-one fill, not a shorter pillow.
