How Often Should You Replace Your Pillow?

5 min readUpdated 2026

Pillows fail gradually, which is exactly why people keep sleeping on dead ones. Loft drops a fraction of an inch a month, your body adapts, and one day you are waking up stiff without ever having made a decision. Most pillows are done somewhere between one and three years, but the fill matters more than the calendar — and there is a ten-second test that settles it.

Lifespan by fill type

Assume the shorter end of each range if you sleep on your side or sleep hot.

  • Polyester and down alternative: 6 months to 2 years. The cheapest fill and the fastest to flatten.
  • Shredded memory foam: 2 to 3 years, longer if the pillow lets you top up the fill.
  • Solid memory foam and contour: 2 to 3 years, until the foam stops springing back.
  • Down and feather: 3 to 5 years with regular fluffing and washing.
  • Latex: 3 to 5 years, and it holds its shape better than anything foam-based.
  • Buckwheat: 5 to 10 years — replace the hulls, keep the casing.

The fold test

Fold your pillow in half and let go. A healthy pillow springs back open on its own. If it stays folded, or opens slowly and lazily, the support structure is gone and no amount of fluffing will bring it back. For a foam pillow, press your palm into the center: if the dent lingers longer than a few seconds, the cells have broken down.

Other signs it is time

Any two of these together mean you are overdue.

  • You wake up with neck or shoulder stiffness that eases within an hour of getting up.
  • You fold or bunch the pillow at night to get enough height.
  • You have to fluff it more than once a night.
  • Visible yellowing, lumps, or an odor that survives a wash.
  • Your allergies are consistently worse in the morning than in the evening.

How to make a pillow last longer

A zippered protector under your pillowcase is the single highest-return habit — it keeps sweat and oil out of the fill, which is what actually degrades it. Beyond that: wash on schedule, air the pillow out in dry air every few weeks, avoid sleeping with wet hair, and never sit or kneel on it.

Pillow or mattress?

If your morning pain is in your neck or upper shoulders, suspect the pillow. If it is in your lower back or hips, suspect the mattress. Pain that disappears within thirty to sixty minutes of standing up points to a support problem rather than an injury — and the pillow is the far cheaper of the two things to replace first.
