The TRTL Pillow doesn't look like a travel pillow, and that's the entire point. Instead of a padded U that squeezes your neck from all sides, it's a soft fleece scarf with a hidden internal support frame — you wrap it around your neck, position the frame under your jaw or to the side, and it holds your head upright the way a gentle neck brace would.
We flew with it on two red-eyes and a cross-country daytime flight, packed it in a personal item, and ran it through the wash twice. The short version: it provides more actual support than any U-shaped pillow we've tested, at roughly a quarter of the packed size — but it only supports one side at a time, and it runs warm.

Firmness and feel
The TRTL is firm where it counts and soft everywhere else. The internal frame is rigid — that's what keeps your head from dropping — but it's padded on both sides and wrapped in plush fleece, so against your skin it reads as a warm scarf, not a device. There's no break-in period; the first time you wrap it correctly it either works for your neck length or it doesn't.
The wrap fastening is strong hook-and-loop, so once you set the tightness it stays set for hours. That matters on a plane, where cheaper wraps slowly loosen as you move.
Support by sleep style
This is a one-position product. You place the frame on the side you lean toward (or centered under your chin) and it props your head at roughly a 45-degree upright angle. If you always tilt to the same side when you sleep sitting up — most people do — it's excellent. If you alternate sides all night, you'll need to unwrap and re-wrap to switch, which is awkward mid-flight.
Leaning forward into a tray-table position doesn't work at all; the frame is designed for upright head support only.
Warmth and breathability
Fleece against your neck in a pressurized cabin is cozy in winter and genuinely warm in summer. On our daytime flight we had to loosen the wrap every hour or so. If you run hot, this is the TRTL's biggest real drawback — the support is worth it, but expect to vent it occasionally.
Packability and cleaning
This is where the TRTL embarrasses U-shaped pillows. It folds nearly flat, slides into a laptop sleeve pocket, and weighs about five ounces. There's no stuff sack to lose and no memory foam to compress. The entire pillow goes in the washing machine — remove nothing — and it air-dries overnight. Ours survived two washes with no loosening of the frame.
